XStrand® S Reinforcements

Overview

XStrand® S Roving has been specifically developed for demanding applications that require high Modulus, high-strength and long fatigue life. Compared to conventional E-glass fibers, XStrand® S fibers are up to 50% stronger, up to 20% stiffer and up to 80% tougher. These benefits enable lighter, more reliable and less expensive Composite parts.

Preliminary corrosion test results show that XStrand® S reinforced composites perform significantly better than those using traditional E-glass fibers – up to 50 percent higher Laminate design strength and 50 years or longer durability. XStrand® S products will offer new design options to further enhance long-term performance of glass-reinforced composites in corrosive environments.

XStrand® S reinforcement is available as single and multi-end roving products, inside and outside pull as well as in fabric form. XStrand® S product is classified as an S-glass according to ASTM C-162, DIN 1259, ISO 2078, ASTM D578, and JIS R3410 standards. This glass formulation is designed for excellent mechanical properties (Tensile strength and modulus) and offers significantly better corrosion resistance properties than conventional E-glass.

Practical Benefits of XStrand® S Reinforcements

Applications include pressure vessels, high-performance boats, tennis rackets, skis and snow boards made with XStrand® S Reinforcements

  • Enable up to 50% weight savings vs. steel
  • Enable up to 50% percent cost saving vs carbon Fiber
  • Offer excellent fatigue and impact resistance
  • Provide opportunity to translate benefits into lower-cost solutions
  • A more cost-competitive solution compared to other commercially available S-glasses fibers
  • Offer superior corrosion resistance compared to other commercially available E-glass
  • Up to 50% higher strength compared to other commercially available E-Glass
  • Up to 20% higher stiffness compared to other commercially available E-Glass

In the case of automotive CNG tanks, lighter weight results in improved vehicle range and handling.
